Kids Rooms

Children's rooms are always a delight to work on. Whether you're planning for your newborn or discovering that your little one is now into pirates rather than princesses, organizing your child's room brings not only the fun decisions but also poses problems that need to be overcome.

First of all, decide on a colour scheme for the room. This may be their own favourite colour or one picked from a favoured theme. Toddlers will often have untidy rooms due to the sheer amount of toys and short attention span for each one so a simple colour scheme will help the room look less cluttered.

Boys many like a nautical theme if they are into boats and fishing in which case a roller blind in one of the blue or turquoise shades is a good choice. Car themes rooms often look dramatic with a red and black colour choice and again, roller blinds will do the job.

For girls, many parents will first go down the pink or lilac route. Here you have a little more choice of embellishments such as edging or decorative beading trimmed along the bottom of a Roman blind. When the sun shines through crystal droplets edging a Roman blind the feel becomes very pretty and girly.

Blinds for children's rooms

Once you have chosen a colour, spend a little time thinking about when you expect your child to be sleeping. This will determine what type of window treatment you go for. If you have a newborn baby, they spend the majority of their day sleeping. With this in mind, blackout blinds are invaluable. Roman or roller blinds can be lined with blackout fabric that shields enough daylight to dim the room for a restful daytime sleep.

For toddlers, blackout blinds are also exceptionally useful on those sunny evenings when it doesn't get dark until late. Trying to tell a child it's bedtime while the sun is up and the birds are chirping is a difficult task – make the room dark with your blackout blinds and you will be much more convincing.

Wood, metal or plastic Venetian blinds are also practical for a child's room, particularly if you are looking for something that is easy to clean. Soften the look with a fabric pelmet or similar.

For safety reasons, always ensure that babies and children cannot reach blind cords, particularly make sure there cot or bed is not placed near the window.
